COUNSELLING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Young people (and their families) may need extra support if they are finding it difficult to deal with or understand their emotions and/or behaviours.

Counselling young people involves helping the child to develop a positive attitude to life, recognise their strengths and express themselves.

Although different methods may be used for counselling young people, the aim of counselling for both children and adults is ultimately the same; to help the individual cope better with their emotions and feelings.

A counsellor needs to have experience of relating to young people and being able to use techniques that a young person can relate and respond to assist them reach a better understanding of their emotions /feelings and behaviours.

Whole works can provide supportive counsellors that can help facilitate communication in a secure, confidential environment where they can express and understand their feelings, thoughts and emotions.  Counselling does not provide children and young people with answers and solutions to their problems.

The aim is to offer is an opportunity to explore feelings, thoughts and experiences, and to understand and discuss issues that may be on the young person’s mind. Counselling is a supportive relationship built on trust, and is available for a young person to use to enable them to make progress and informed choices.

Many young people experience difficulties at home, in school, with their peers and in understanding their feelings and emotions. Counselling provides many benefits for the individuals willing to explore such difficulties.

Areas that young people may require support for include:

Family and step-family relationships

Bullying

Bereavement/loss

Emotional problems

Behavioural problems

Self harm

Sexuality

Identity and looking positively to the future

Eating disorders
